Best Concerts Ever!

I went to WinterJam 2010 last night in Mobile with our youth group. I will say that Michael Tait as the new singer for Newsboys is exciting, but I miss the Australian-accented vocals of the previous singer. Michael Tait is quite the entertainer. He reminded me of a non-sexualized version of Ruby Rod from The Fifth Element. And he told the audience, "you're like a huge black choir, made of a lot of white people." Then he rode a tiny platform 30 feet into the air, rappelled off, and almost crashed onto the teenagers below. Now THAT'S entertainment.

All of this had me reflecting on my favorite concert/live music experiences of all time.

1) Beach Boys at the MS Gulf Coast Coliseum. I was really young (elementary school), but as this was the first large venue concert I ever went to, it made quite an impression. I remember really young women in bikinis dancing around with the obviously much-older Beach Boys. Lots of beach boys bounced around the audience.

2) Jock Tamson's Bairns At Evergreen Pres in Memphis. Amazing. Probably the most exciting music I've ever heard live, with a great audience. I will never forget it. Alli and I tracked it down and loved it! I love Scottish folk music. Love love love!

3) Some other Celtic concert at a restaurant when I was in Germany. I had no idea who it was but it was awesome! I love small venues, which leads me too...

4) David Wilcox at the Walt's house. Something to do with humanitarian coffee-related house concerts, but it was exciting! And strange to be so close to an artist at work, but excellent.

5) Front Row for the Doobie Brothers at Memphis in May around 2002. Guitars on stands. Enough said.

6) Counting Crows at the same festival. Adam Duritz was super-high on something so it was kind of like a documentary about how messed up famous/successful people can get. I was seriously tired of walking and standing that day. I like concerts with seats a lot more.

7) Jennifer Knapp at some church in the D.C. area. My aunt and friend and I were the only ones to even budge at this small venue rock concert. Disconcerting how calm everyone else was but the music was great. This concert was probably one of the last ones before her years-long hiatus.

8) Vienna Boys Choir some point as a child when my parents brought me and my sister. In Gautier at MGCCC auditorium. Awesome. "True Colors" song was the highlight for me.

So, I know there are many more for me, and I'll add some. What are some of your favorites?

"He reminded me of a non-sexualized version of Ruby Rod from The Fifth Element." = best line I've read in weeks, lol.

... best concerts? I've changed so much since my early 20's when I was going to concerts that it's hard to say. I also saw what was left of the beach boys as a kid in Portland, Ore., I just remember there being lots of hippies there. Seeing Pearl Jam in Boise was fun back in 2001 I think. I've been to a couple of U2 concerts - they put on a great show - but I was never much of a U2 fan. My undergrad's choir always did a great Christmas concert at this cool old Presbyterian church in downtown Spokane, Wash., those were pretty great too.

The first big concert I went to was to see the Dixie Chicks at the Pyramid in Memphis. Big deal back then - circa 1999. Moving on...Andrew Bird concert last year was amazing! Also, you know my love for Jars of Clay, and I have enjoyed seeing them a couple of times.

THE AVETT BROTHERS! in Baltimore with Ruth 2(3?) years ago and in NYC last year! They are beautiful, amazing, high-energy musicians who LOVE and appreciate their audiences. Scott, Seth, Bob...LOVE!

Anna, does opera count? Not really a "concert" I guess. I did get to go to Renee Fleming's concert in Baltimore in DEC '07. A backstage emergency exit alarm went off during one of the more important and sensitive arias. She had to tell the conductor to stop until somebody solved the issue. She laughed and said to the audience, "Well, I guess I'll never forget this!"
That was awesome!

Thanks for all the great comments, y'all! I guess I could have put "live music experiences" but I think in terms of concerts I suppose. Then I would add seeing Die Jakobsleiter at the Vienna Opera House (Staatsoper? I forget which one). The music was amazing, and the set was essentially a giant traveling trunk. Awesome.

David Gray at Alcatraz in Milan, Italy: very small event seemingly due to the fact that he wasn't too popular with the Italians...it was awesome.

Coldplay at the Verizon Center in 2006: 8th row, center--> Fab!

Andrew Bird at the 9:30 Club: such an amazing musician

Death Cab for Cutie at Merriwether Post Pavillion: lovely night, lovely band

Wilco somewhere in Delaware: didn't realize how much I liked them till this concert

Ray LaMontagne at the Meyerhoff with the symphony: enough said

Worst: Ryan Adams at the Meyerhoff; jerk kicked his band off the stage after the third song then moped around on the piano before unplugging himself and coming down into the aisle to moan some more. Most people left--terrible!

Too many concerts to remember. One of my favorites was doing staging for some old grateful dead folks that tour as "Phil Lesh and Friends."

The concert was ok, but the people watching was awesome!!

Agreed to the fun people-watching. I LOVE Andrew Bird! Would love to see him!
